Finding a Lawyer

Legal Services Society

If you are eligible for legal representation through Legal Services Society of BC (Legal Aid), your intake worker can refer you to a lawyer.

Please contact Legal Service Society for more information:

Lawyer Referral Services

Lawyer Referral Service will give the name of a lawyer in your area. You can ask for a woman lawyer or a lawyer who takes legal aid cases. The service will only provide you with one name at a time, but you can call back up to three times in a day. You will need to call the lawyer yourself to make an appointment. Tell the lawyer you got her name from the Lawyer Referral Service. For $25.00 plus tax, the lawyer will meet with you for 30 minutes. If you are not comfortable with the lawyer after this first meeting, you can call the service and ask for another name.

Women-serving agencies

Many women's centres, transition houses, and sexual assault crisis centres have relationships with feminist lawyers who have experience working with clients who have experienced violence or abuse. They may be able to refer you to a lawyer. See the Community Resources section of this site to look for agencies in your community.
